It is difficult for a navigator to find directions to a given target in an unfamiliar environment , especially a virtual environment. The commonly used overview maps can show survey knowledge only on one particular scale but cannot provide spatial knowledge at other scales. In this study, three wayfinding aids (a view-in-view map, animation guide, and human system collaboration) were compared experimentally in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, and users' satisfaction. Results show that although these three aids all can effectively help participants find targets quicker and easier, their usefulness is different, with the view-in-view map being the best and human system collaboration the worst. Their usefulness also appears to be different for people with different spatial abilities. The results indicate that the design of wayfind-ing tools in virtual environments should consider the type and the presentation style of spatial information based on wayfinding tasks and users' spatial ability.

Evaluation of Wayfinding Aids Interface in Virtual Environment
It is difficult for a navigator to find a way to a given target location in an unfamiliar environment. Often, wayfinding guidance such as an overview map is provided to assist the navigator. However, overview maps can only show survey knowledge at one particular scale, and cannot provide other kinds of spaital knowledge (e.g. procedure knowledge) or survey knowledge at different scales. In this...
متن کاملUsing cognitive agent-based simulation for the evaluation of indoor wayfinding systems
This paper presents a novel approach to simulate human wayfinding behaviour incorporating visual cognition into a software agent for a computer aided evaluation of wayfinding systems in large infrastructures. The proposed approach follows the Sense-Plan-Act paradigm comprised of a model for visual attention, navigation behaviour and pedestrian movement. Stochastic features of perception are inc...
متن کاملComparing Human Wayfinding Behavior in Real and Virtual Environment
This paper builds on a previous research comparing wayfinding behavior in virtual and real environments in order to reveal the theoretical basis for comparison while simultaneously producing applicable implications for designers and architects. The chosen site is a complex office building. Its virtual equivalent was first modeled using standard design tools available for most practicing archite...
متن کاملDesigning Space in Virtual Environments for Aiding Wayfinding Behaviour
The aim of this paper is to develop an architectural way of thinking about designing space in a virtual environment, in order to inform human wayfinding behaviour. Several generic objects and spatial elements that a virtual environment consists of are suggested, their spatial significance and formal characteristics are identified and the way that these affect human wayfinding behaviour is also ...
متن کاملInformation Legibility in 3D Information Visualisation: Navigation aids to assist information finding
Information visualisation (IV) involves representing information visually as a mean of getting insight into data. Many techniques are available in visualising information, with city/urban planning as one of them. The challenge that lies with city/urban planning technique in Information Visualisation is how to enhance the information legibility as to assist users in their wayfinding task. Univer...
